Nebraska football missed out on a wide receiver target earlier this week but on Thursday, the Huskers landed one of the top wide receivers in the transfer portal with the commitment of Nyziah Hunter.

Hunter is a former four-star recruit who has played for Cal for the past two seasons. He redshirted in 2023, but this past season, the 6-foot-2 receiver broke out with 40 receptions for 578 yards and five touchdowns.

Nebraska football has talent in the wide receiver room led by guys like Jacory Barney and incoming freshman Cortez Mills. But after Jahmal Banks and Isaiah Neyor graduated, the Huskers didn’t have a true No. 1 wide receiver.

Now they do.

Nyziah Hunter can be a No. 1 wide receiver for Nebraska football

Hunter is similar to Banks but more dynamic. He’s got big hands and excels in coming down with contested catches. He was also a consistent producer in a power-4 league at Cal.

In 10 out of 12 games,  Hunter had at least 30 yards receiving. The redshirt freshman also had multiple receptions in 11 of 12 games and nine games with at least three receptions.

That’s exactly the kind of consistency that Nebraska was lacking last season from its wide receivers. With Dana Holgorsen calling the plays and Dylan Raiola throwing the ball, this should be an attractive offense for wide receivers.

According to 247 Sports, Hunter is the No. 20 wide receiver in the 2024 transfer portal class. He’s ranked 70th overall.

I’d still like to see another veteran added. After Barney, the second-most receptions of a returning receiver were the 12 made by Jalen Lloyd. Janiran Bonner had 10 and both of those players have a chance to be more productive under Holgorsen.

I’m also excited to see what Quinn Clark can do after a redshirt year. He traveled for the USC game for a reason. If Nebraska didn’t add another wide receiver, they’d probably be fine. It would be more of a luxury, but Dane Key is visiting this weekend. Georgia is also in the mix and they have been trending with the crystal ball projections.

Maybe he won’t even visit, but if he does, that tells you Nebraska football wants another receiver, at least in an ideal world.

Either way, Hunter was a huge addition and he gives Nebraska a wideout with true No. 1 potential for Dylan Raiola next season.
