Nebraska football has just one in-state commitment right now in the 2026 recruiting class, but there could be another name on the board as far as in-state recruits are concerned.
The Huskers have been communicating with unranked running back Nelsyn Wheeler out of Millard South. The 5-foot-9, 205-pound running back is a dynamic athlete. As a sophomore, Wheeler ran the 100-meter dash in 10.77.
Even though Wheeler isn’t ranked, he’s gotten plenty of recruiting interest with 18 offers total, including four from Big Ten programs: Wisconsin, Michigan State, Northwestern, and Maryland.
Bryan Munson of Husker Online reports that offers are expected to Wheeler from Illinois, Texas Tech, and others, maybe even Nebraska football.
The Huskers do have three running backs on their board right now: Brian Bonner, Jamal Rule, and DeZephen Walker. Notre Dame is the crystal ball leader for Bonner right now, but all three backs are scheduled to take official visits to see the Huskers this summer.
However, a home-run threat, like Wheeler has the potential to be, is much-needed. I’d like to see Nebraska take at least two running backs. Landing one of those three listed (with an offer) is possible. Add Wheeler to the mix, and that would be a solid haul.
Nebraska did just visit Wheeler last week. We’ll see where things go. Darion Jones was also offered in recent months, so if Wheeler does get a scholarship offer, he would be the fourth in-state recruit in 2026 to get one.
Details announced for Nebraska football vs. Cincinnati
Nebraska football fans knew that the Huskers were going to open the season in Arrowhead against the Cincinnati Bearcats. But now, we know the channel and kickoff time, too.
The game will be broadcast on ESPN, and it will start at 8 PM CST. Some Nebraska fans don’t love that. It does seem like a weird start time, but TV ratings rule all.
Either way, the season opener can’t get here soon enough.
