Kool-Aid drinking is a hot topic among Nebraska football fans. Many are drinking the Kool-Aid served by head coach Matt Rhule, who dished out another big dose of it this week.

The Huskers went 7-6 in Rhule’s second season, winning their first bowl game in a decade, while also having the first winning season, of any sort, since 2016.

It wasn’t the step forward some fans wanted. It was progress, though.

More progress is expected this season. I’ve predicted double-digit wins and a playoff berth. Phil Steele, a well-respected college football prognosticator, also said he Huskers are a playoff “sleeper.”

I’m drinking the Kool-Aid. Joel Klatt is drinking the Kool-Aid, and after what Rhule said this week about Dylan Raiola, even more Nebraska football fans will be drinking it, too.

In an interview with NBC, Rhule was discussing Raiola, the former five-star recruit who is entering his second season as the starting quarterback.

“I think he’s going to be one of the best players in the nation,” Rhule said. “He’s going to play quarterback for someone for the next 15-20 years. He’s just that gifted. It just comes naturally to him.”

If that’s true, Nebraska will take the third-year leap everyone has been talking about. Raiola was good last season, throwing 13 touchdowns compared to 11 interceptions. He completed 67 percent of his passes and had just under 3,000 yards.

It wasn’t historic. But it was a solid first season, one Raiola should build on in 2025. And if Rhule is correct in his prediction, the Big Red Kool-Aid, for once, will live up to the billing.
