Whenever Nebraska football head coach Matt Rhule pops up on social media, it’s usually to post something good and he didn’t disappoint on Tuesday night.
During a press conference before the season, the Nebraska football coach was asked about the expanded playoff system and Rhule said that he thought the Big Ten should “get four teams in every year.” Rhule also said that the Big Ten was the best college football conference, and compared it to the NFL.
“This is the NFL of college football.”
Of course, as a noted SEC homer, that offended ESPN’s Paul Finebaum, who blasted Rhule’s comments on air and responded by saying this: “Matt, stay in your lane. Job one: win enough games to get to some stupid bowl game. Don’t worry about the big boys because you are not one of them.”
Nebraska football’s Matt Rhule gets back at Paul Finebaum
Rhule’s Nebraska football team did win enough games to get a “stupid bowl game” — the Pinstripe Bowl — a game that the Huskers won to clinch a winning season.
So Rhule did his job. The Big Ten also did its part. The league was the only one to have two teams in the semifinals of the College Football Playoff. With Ohio State’s national championship, plus Michigan’s in 2023, the Big Ten has won two in a row, prompting Finebaum to admit on Tuesday, that the Big Ten “owns college football.”
At this point, Rhule pounced on social media. The Nebraska football head coach posted a video with his comments, followed by Finebaum’s with some nifty editing in between.
In the end, Rhule was right about the Big Ten. He got Nebraska football to a bowl game and hopefully, soon, the Huskers can be one of the big boys Finebaum is talking about.
