Nebraska Football: Reacting to Logan Smothers transfer destination

Published

on

Logan Smothers won’t be returning to Nebraska football after he committed to transfer to Jacksonville State. Here are some quick thoughts.

Some Nebraska football fans were holding out hope that Logan Smothers would return to the Huskers, as a backup for the 2023 season, but that’s officially out the window now.

Smothers announced his transfer portal destination on Tuesday as he will play for Jacksonville State next season, heading home to the state of Alabama for the rest of his college career. (Yes, the Jacksonville in Alabama).

You might not have heard much about the Gamecocks but former Michigan head coach Rich Rodriguez is leading the way for the newly-minted FBS program.

Jacksonville State is making the leap to the FBS after years of success at the FCS level. Last season, the Gamecocks were 9-2 and they will be part of Conference USA.

Reacting to Logan Smothers’ transfer

Matt Rhule said he was open to Smothers coming back and honestly, it would have been a good thing. He’s got some experience and started games before. He’s also a dual threat which should be perfect for Rich Rod and the spread system he likes to run.

Jeff Sims is going to be stellar for Nebraska football. I believe that 100 percent. Yet, he needs to prove he can stay healthy for an entire season and if he can’t the depth chart is shaky behind him.

Henrich Haarberg showed promise. Chubba Purdy also looked better this spring and getting healthy would be a nice step forward for him. The same can be said about Smothers who sat out this spring with an injury.

A return would have been good for Nebraska. But clearly, Smothers is going to get a chance to start at the FBS level next season for Jacksonville State and you can’t blame him for seizing that opportunity.

There’s only one football. You can share the ball among running backs and receivers, but you can’t really share the quarterback position. So I understand Casey Thompson and Smothers leaving.

I appreciated their efforts with the Huskers and wish them the best.
