Nebraska football is getting a grass surface and that’s a good thing

For as long as I can remember, Nebraska football has played on Turf at Lincoln Memorial Stadium. There have been different kinds of turf, but frankly, I haven’t seen a single game or highlight of the Huskers playing a home game on grass.

However, according to Athletic Director Troy Dannen, that’s going to change for Nebraska football in the 2026 season. Dannen has been a strong supporter of head coach Matt Rhule since his arrival and this was something that Rhule really wanted.

Coming from the NFL, grass versus turf is a hot topic of debate. There’s no question that injuries happen less often on grass. There’s a reason that when the United States hosts the World Cup in 2026, NFL stadiums will be using natural grass for those games, even if they use turf for NFL games.

The reason is that FIFA won’t allow any matches to be played on turf due to player safety. That’s all you should need to know to support this move.

It could lead to a sloppier surface and it won’t happen until after the 2025 season. But I don’t see Nebraska football being the last team to make this move either. Other programs will make the switch back to grass. It’s more expensive to maintain but it’s better for the players and Nebraska is all about what’s best for the players.

Honestly, football should be played on grass, and for the first time in my lifetime, I’m excited to see Memorial Stadium with a natural playing surface.
