Nebraska football will be without a key member of the secondary as it heads into the 2023 season. Safety Myles Farmer has been suspended from the team. Nebraska football coach Matt Rhule made the announcement in his practice updates on Monday, according to multiple media reports.

Farmer’s suspension was a result of not doing the “little things”, and he failed to meet Nebraska’s “standard” within the program, per a report from On3’s Steven Sipple. The coach did not specify when Farmer was going to return to the team.

As it relates to the football field, this is a loss. Nebraska has depth at the safety position, but Farmer certainly brings the additional experience to the table. He recorded 73 tackles and an interception on the season. He has appeared in 26 games, and has tallied 112 total tackles and four interceptions in his Nebraska career.

What does this mean for Nebraska Football?

Nebraska football has the depth to offset Farmer’s suspension. Corey Collier and Omar Brown are two names that could really emerge with the absence of farmer. With Marquis Buford Jr. out to begin the start of training camp, the depth is very thin at the position at the moment. Other guys will need to step up.

Brown has experience from last year. He recorded five tackles in five games he appeared in. He didn’t have a huge role last year, but it looks like that is about to change.

Nebraska football is trying to set a standard within the program, and Rhule and his staff are making it abundantly clear. The resignation of former tight ends coach Bob Wager and this latest report with Farmer indicate that Rhule is trying to set a culture standard within the program. This is certainly refreshing to see. Previous coaching staffs did not do that.

Hopefully, we see Farmer on the field at some point. As it stands right now, Nebraska is going to go into camp looking for others to step up. This could be an opportunity for those players to stand out to the coaching staff.
