Nebraska football was able to land a commitment from 2024 safety Donovan Jones on Thursday. The announcement came via Twitter.

Jones is a three-star recruit. He is the 11th overall player in the 2024 class from the state of Nebraska per the 247Sports rankings. He has an 86 overall numerical ranking. Jones was recruited to Nebraska by secondary coach Evan Cooper He took an official visit on Monday.

Jones will bring physicality to the Nebraska secondary. He measures in at 6-foot-1, 185 pounds. He is not afraid to be aggressive when defending the run or the pass, and has good pursuit angles in order to make a play. On top of his instincts, he is a heavy-hitter. He is not afraid to make big hits defensively, and that certainly goes well with his aggressiveness. Jones fits the mold of the safety in that regard.

Jones should fit well in the 3-3-5 defense. That type of physicality and aggressiveness could allow him to take away the middle of the field as a safety.

Currently, the 2024 Nebraska football recruiting class continues to be a highly-rated one. The class itself has three commitments from the state of Nebraska. Jones is certainly interesting, as this may mean that Caleb Benning is now no longer an option for the program. The class ranks 28th overall and is on a bit of a hot streak.

More good news could come for Nebraska football on Friday, with Dae’vonn Hall and Isaiah McMorris both announcing at the same time. As for now, Jones is a nice pre-announcement get for a class that now has 14 commitments. On top of that, he makes the third in-state commitment for Nebraska football. This coaching staff wanted to make the state of Nebraska a priority. Now, they’re showing that they’re doing that.

It will be interesting to see what else happens this week, and if Nebraska can land on a couple more key targets. Needless to say, this class is undoubtedly trending in the right direction.
