Nebraska football gets another crystal ball for a four-star recruit, plus a 2024 top target will announce his commitment Friday.

When we talk about possible candidates to become the next Nebraska football commitment in the 2024 class, we need to start talking about four-star cornerback Mario Buford.

Buford, who is out of DeSoto, Texas, is the younger brother of Nebraska football defensive back Marques Buford and following a visit to the Huskers in March, a crystal ball projection had him going to Nebraska.

That was a good sign and another came on Tuesday as Brian Christopherson, who I view as the most trusted recruiting expert at Husker 247, put it in his own projection of Buford to Nebraska.

Both crystal ball projections have a confidence level of six. The 5-foot-11, 165-pound cornerback is ranked 306th overall in the 2024 class according to the 247 sports composite rankings. He’s also the 24th-best cornerback and ranks as the 52nd-best recruit in the Lone Star State.

Buford has taken five visits to Nebraska in all. Just one has come since Matt Rhule has become the head coach. His other spring visit was to Michigan State. There hasn’t been much talk of a timeline, but the On3 prediction machine gives Nebraska football a better than 60-percent chance to land his commitment.

On3.com also rates Buford much higher than any other service. He ranks 114th overall and 11th among cornerbacks in the On3 rankings for 2024.

The Huskers are trending in the right direction and maybe if they can get him on campus again this spring or for an official visit, they should have a good shot to close it out with a commitment.

Top 2024 target set to announce on Friday

There have been some negative trends for Nebraska football recruiting recently and one of them is with four-star offensive tackle Andrew Sprague.

Sprague is ranked as the No. 9 offensive tackle in the 2024 class according to the 247 sports composite rankings. He’s 6-foot-8, 290 pounds, and the No. 4 player in the state of Missouri. Sprague was part of the big visit weekend recently but soon after, started trending with projections to Michigan.

The offensive tackle visited Michigan during the spring game and has now announced a commitment date for this Friday soon after. That’s not a good sign and you can likely cross off at least one top target in the 2024 class.
