Nebraska basketball extended head coach Fred Hoiberg through the 2028-29 season. The contract will pay him $4.25 million next season with increases in each of the subsequent contract years. This was reported by Husker247’s Brian Christopherson.
Hoiberg had an up-and-down tenure for Nebraska basketball, and it looked like his time in Lincoln may be ending short. However, he flipped the switch over the last couple seasons, and it’s culminated in something big this year. Nebraska basketball is set to play in their first NCAA tournament game in 10 years on Friday, and finished the season with the second -most wins in team history
Overall, Hoiberg has a record of 63-93 in five seasons at Nebraska.
This was a well-deserved extension for Hoiberg. There have been some lean years for the basketball program, but that has really changed. The coach has been able to flip the culture around, and finally has found a formula that can win in the big Ten. This was especially evident over the last two seasons. Now, he has the program well-positioned for the future, and back to some form of respectability.
Welcome news for Nebraska basketball
This move is certainly welcome news, as the Nebraska athletic department undergoes a transition period in search of a new athletic director. Now, Nebraska basketball will be able to keep their coach long-term. Hoiberg and his staff can continue to build, and take this program to new heights. This season was proof of that, and it’s going to be exciting to see what he can do in the future.
Any concerns about Hoiberg leaving can be put to rest for now. The coach is here to stay. That’s a great thing for a basketball program that is finally starting to turn the corner.
