According to Nebraska football head coach Matt Rhule, he had no idea that former four-star tight end Mac Markway had enrolled at Nebraska or was going to.
Rhule said he was told about Markway and was “shocked.” There was no connection to Nebraska, Rhule said, other than that the Huskers could be “pretty good” and “use tight ends.”
Markway is 6-foot-4, 250 pounds, and was ranked No. 242 overall according to the 247 Sports composite rankings in the 2023 class. He’s also ranked 15th among tight ends and caught a touchdown pass playing for LSU last season. He played in all 13 games for the Tigers.
Nebraska football adds another blue chip to the roster
Markway also left LSU and the football team earlier this season. Reportedly, he entered the transfer portal. The blue-chip tight end enrolled at Nebraska and has been practicing with the Huskers.
Rhule also said he would be eligible to play this season. I’m not sure how all that works but Rhule would know and it will be interesting to see how quickly Markway can get up to speed.
Matt Rhule says Nebraska football could use two kickers
Rhule didn’t name a starting running back or kicker. He did say that the Huskers could use two kickers on Saturday.
Tristan Alvano has been recovering from an injury and might not be 100 percent. Rhule said he could handle shorter field goals, while John Hohl could handle longer kicks and kickoff duties.
Rhule also said Blye Hill and Henry Lutovsky will be available to play on Saturday. That’s at least a good sign for the future as the team is mostly healthy at this point, two days ahead of the season opener.
