Nebraska Cornhuskers head volleyball coach John Cook confirmed that star player Harper Murray is still a member of the team following her arrest for DUI and other charges on April 5th according to news reports.

Nebraska volleyball is taking part in spring practices, just like the Nebraska football team. The Huskers also have a spring volleyball match. Cook spoke to the media on Friday and confirmed that Murray, the Big Ten Freshman of the Year, was still a member of the team.

“She’s focused on being a student-athlete right now and taking care of that,” Cook said to 1011 NOW. She’s “still here and still in school,” he added.

The status of Murray has been an interesting question. The sophomore-to-be made a mistake — a really bad mistake — but a mistake all the same. Here’s hoping she learned from it. I’m also encouraged that we’ll get to see her playing for the Cornhuskers again, although probably next fall if I had to guess.

Nebraska basketball in a strong spot for Connor Essegian

Robin Washut of Husker Online recently projected the Nebraska Cornhuskers to land former Wisconsin guard Connor Essegian in what would be another solid addition from the transfer portal.

Fred Hoiberg had a lot of work to do, especially following the departures of Josiah Allick and Keisei Tominaga due to graduation, as well as Jamarques Lawrence and C.J. Wilcher via the transfer portal. Nebraska also lost Eli Rice — another potential contributor to the portal.

However, with the additions of Andrew Morgan (F/C), Rollie Worster (PG), and Gavin Griffiths (guard/wing) the Huskers have done some impressive work.

They need more 3-point shooting, as well as depth at guard which Essegian can provide. He averaged 11 points per game for the Badgers as a freshman but dropped off as a sophomore.

The 6-foot-4 guard has made 89 triples in two seasons and shot 34 percent. We’ll see if the Huskers are able to land his commitment but he would be another key piece to the rotation.

Nebraska Cornhuskers diamond roundup

The Nebraska baseball (24-11, 7-3) team got back on track with a 6-3 win over Maryland on Friday night. Brett Sears was stellar again, going seven innings and allowing just three runs on seven hits. He struck out eight batters and issued just two walks to improve to 7-0. He’s the first Nebraska baseball pitcher to do that since Tony Watson back in 2006.

Cayden Brumbaugh also did some work for the Nebraska Cornhuskers at the plate going 3-for-4 with two doubles, two RBI, and two runs scored. Ben Columbus also stayed hot, going 3-for-3 with a solo home run. Cole Evans added two hits and a double, plus Joshua Overbeek homered for the second time this season.

The Nebraska Cornhuskers softball team didn’t have as good a night. They played Michigan in a battle of top-3 Big Ten teams and fell 4-3 in extra innings on a walk-off home run.
