Nebraska football lost in brutal fashion on Thursday night, but there were still some major overreactions to the Huskers defeat.
We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, Nebraska football is a pressure cooker. Whether you’re the head coach or the starting quarterback, the scrutiny is real.
Nebraska football fans are desperate for a winner and the agony is real. The Huskers lead college football in the most one-score losses over the past five years, as well as the most blown fourth-quarter leads.
At some point, the nightmare has to end right?
Many of us thought it would end with Rhule. Maybe it was foolish to think the Huskers would find a way to avoid painful losses because of a new head coach.
But still, the end of Thursday’s game was like a twilight zone. However, there were some positive things — the tackling, special teams, and even the running game.
The sky isn’t falling. It might feel like it, especially after seeing what Colorado did this weekend, but Matt Rhule has only coached one game for Nebraska football.
My belief in him isn’t shaken and here are the biggest overreactions to the Minnesota loss.
Matt Rhule needs to be fired
Come on, people. It’s way too early to start this talk. Yes, Nebraska lost a game it should have won. That doesn’t mean that the Matt Rhule era is doomed.
I realize it made folks feel worse to see Deion Sanders and Colorado knock off TCU. But that doesn’t mean Rhule is doomed to fail.
Does he need a win this weekend? Yes. But even if the Huskers start 0-2, and even if they fail to reach a bowl game this season, it won’t be anywhere close to time to start talking about firing Matt Rhule.
Nebraska made the wrong choice at QB
First, it’s not fair to say Nebraska football chose Jeff Sims over Casey Thompson. Both guys wanted to start and Casey was the No. 2 at the time. What was Rhule supposed to do? Lie?
Sure, it might have kept Thompson on the roster, but Rhule doesn’t work that way. Thompson’s team also played Monmouth. If Sims had played them last Thursday, I’m sure the stat line would look better.
Yes, the turnovers were disappointing. But to act like Sims is horrible is an overreaction. Everyone has a bad game. Let’s just see how things play out.
The Huskers are doomed against Colorado
It’s going to be more challenging than I thought. I’ll admit I was wrong about the Buffs. Their elite talent is going to be a problem. Nebraska football should still have the edge in the trenches. TCU ran for 262 total yards after all and limited Colorado to 55.
Matt Rhule will need to prove himself as a head coach. Marcus Satterfield and Tony White will need good games too, but this isn’t hopeless.
Nebraska can win the game. It’s a slight underdog at this point for a reason. It just has to use a specific formula, which starts with taking care of the football.
