Husker Big Red Daily: Nebraska depth chart surprises, 2028 QB to visit, more

The Nebraska football team released the first official depth chart of the 2026 season ahead of the game against Ohio on Saturday, and there were a few surprises.

One thing that wasn’t a surprise was the fact that Gunnar Gottula has been named the starting right tackle, with an OR next to his name. Tree Babalade is also considered a starter. He’s been banged up, so it seems like Gottula will start on Saturday.

That will be his 17th career start for Nebraska football at right or left tackle. The rest of the offensive line went as expected. Most of the offense did. All three running backs were listed at No. 1. Isaiah Mozee was first, and I’d expect him to start, but all three will play.

The biggest surprises came on the defensive line. Riley Van Poppel was beaten out for a starting job by Jashear Whittington and Owen Stoudmire. He will still play, but that’s slightly disappointing. Williams Nwaneri is also listed as a backup to Cameron Lenhardt and Anthony Jones.

So three of the four defensive line starters are transfers. Victor Evans and Jeremiah Charles were each listed as the No. 1 cornerback. Some notable backups on the depth chart are Tyson Terry at DT, Danny Odem at CB, Jeremiah Jones at defensive end, and 6-foot-4 Braylen Prude at cornerback.

2028 quarterback to visit Nebraska football this fall

The 2028 QB board is still in flux for Nebraska, although it seems a new top target is emerging in three-star quarterback Owen Herrick. 

Offered by Nebraska back in May, Herrick is 6-foot-2, 185 pounds out of Pittsburgh. He’s ranked No. 419 overall via the 247 Spots composite rankings in the 2028 class. According to Bobby Schneider of Husker Online, Herrick will visit on September 12 for the Bowling Green game.

Herrick visited Ole Miss over the summer and has another visit there scheduled for November. Penn State, Illinois, and Ohio State hosted him for visits this summer, as did Nebraska.

It feels like the Huskers and Ole Miss could be the top two teams. The Gameday visit will be a chance for the Huskers to move the needle.

Seven Huskers signed with NFL practice squads

10 former Nebraska football players are on NFL rosters, if you count Wandale Robinson and Nate Boerkircher. Nine more have signed on NFL practice squads: Eric Gregory (Patriots), DeShon Singleton (Chiefs), Trey Palmer (Saints), Henry Lutovsky (Bucs), Ben Scott (Bucs), Isaiah Neyor (Packers), Dane Key (Broncos), and Ben Stille (Lions).
