Nebraska basketball head coach Fred Hoiberg has done a stellar job of supplementing the roster from the transfer portal, and it appears that he’s not quite done.

Nebraska still needs another big. The good news is that, according to Robin Washut of Husker Online, another 6-foot-10 transfer portal target is coming to Lincoln for a visit.

Fred Hoiberg seeks to add another valuable player from the transfer portal

Damon Wilkinson is the player currently visiting Nebraska. He played for South Dakota State last season, averaging 13.9 points per game to go along with 6.4 rebounds as a forward. Wilkinson started 19 games for the Jackrabbits as a sophomore, averaging 23.9 minutes per game.

Wilkinson would bring a few things to the table: size, depth, low-post scoring, and offensive rebounding. The South Dakota native is a skilled low-post scorer. Boden Kapke will fill that role for Nebraska basketball, but Wilkinson will be a valuable option, likely coming off the bench.

Wilkinson shot 59 percent from the field this season. He has attempted one 3-pointer in his entire career. So this isn’t a big who will play on the perimeter. His game is about finishing around the basket. He’s also got an offensive rebounding rate of 10.7, which is really strong, with 2.2 per game.

The fact that Wilkinson is a rising junior makes this move even better. He’will have two seasons left to play. There could be a scenario where the Huskers have their top three big guys for the next two seasons. Hoiberg also landed a guard with two years of eligibility, too.

When you add Jacob Lanier and Colin Rice to that mix, it’s a solid nucleus of players, along with Brayden Frager, who will be just a redshirt sophomore next season. Leo Curtis will be a Sophomore.

All of those players could seemingly get an extra year, too, if the five-in-five passes, allowing players to play five seasons in five years in NCAA sports.

As far as Wilkinson, he’s a scoring machine, reaching double figures in 27 of 32 games last season. With Rienk Mast out of eligibility, the Huskers needed another low-post threat, and Hoiberg is on the verge of landing one.
