Life comes at you fast in the world of college basketball. One day, you’re thinking about the Final Four, the next day, it’s about building the roster for next season, which is what Nebraska basketball experienced last week.

After Thursday’s crushing loss to Iowa, the focus now is on the offseason. As it stands, Fred Hoiberg is expected to have two spots to work with, assuming there aren’t any other departures.

There usually are, though. Nebraska basketball fans have their eyes on Braden Frager. He will certainly have other teams reaching out to him. The Big Ten Sixth Man of the Year is in line for much higher compensation. Hopefully, that comes from the Huskers.

Pryce Sandfort also has a decision to make about his future, with the NBA draft looming. Rienk Mast, Sam Hoiberg, and Jamarques Lawrence are out of eligibility. Some others are too, but the Huskers have also added two high school signees in Colin Rice and Jacob Lanier.

Another big is clearly needed to replace Rienk Mast. There are some internal options. We addressed another transfer Nebraska should target, but a new name entered the portal this week, or intends to, and that’s former Colorado center Bangot Dak.

Bangot Dak would be perfect for Nebraska basketball

The Lincoln native, who played for Lincoln Southeast, has started 50 games for the Buffaloes over the past two seasons. In 2025-26, he averaged 11.8 points per game (49%), 6.5 rebounds, and 1.6 blocks per game, plus 1.4 assists and 0.7 steals.

Dak is a career 26.5 percent 3-point shooter. He doesn’t necessarily fit what you think of when it comes to Fred Hoiberg’s bigs, but Hoiberg can also get just about anyone to shoot 30 percent from deep.

Dak would also provide more rim protection, which is needed, as well as an interior scoring presence that doesn’t exist on the roster without Mast. Last season, the 7-footer had 22 games scoring in double figures, with four double-doubles.

With his connection to Nebraska, this feels like a player the Huskers should pursue. He would fit a need, and although he’s not the shooter that Mast is, he would also be a major upgrade on defense and on the glass.
