Nebraska football is off to a dream start in the 2027 recruiting class.

With all that’s happening, it’s hard to give full attention to the commitment of Tory Pittman. The attention that it needs.

We offered up our thoughts last week. Pittman is a five-star prospect who is ranked 17th overall in the 2027 class, according to the 247 Sports composite rankings. Matt Rhule hasn’t always landed the top-ranked player in the state, but Pittman was a top priority.

The dynamic athlete who could easily be a wide receiver, too, wanted to stay home. He did interviews with local TV about how he wants to win championships at Nebraska.

It’s everything Nebraska fans have wanted to hear. He wasn’t looking for a big NIL deal elsewhere. He also didn’t drag out the process for bigger offers. Pittman wanted to play for Nebraska football and wants to be part of re-awakening the sleeping giant.

On two fronts, he will certainly help. Pittman has first-round pick potential. Xavier McKinney of the Green Bay Packers is an ideal comparison. He also gives the Huskers, along with 65th-ranked overall Trae Taylor, the four-star quarterback, an incredible foundation for the 2027 class.

Steve Wiltfong of Rivals also reported this week that Nebraska’s efforts are ramping up in the 2027 class with other elite targets. The 2026 class is a little underwhelming. It is what it is.

Key targets for Nebraska football in 2027

However, Nebraska football is a real factor with five-star tight end Ahmad Hudson. Kennedy Brown, the No. 1 recruit in the entire 2027 class, also has Nebraska in the mix. The Huskers are near the top, as in the top three, with five-star cornerback Juju Johnson, who has visited Nebraska and is expected to make another trip this fall.

Nebraska football recently made the top eight for safety KJ Caldwell, who is ranked 67th overall, while four-star EDGE KJ Green, who is 97th overall in 2027, is planning a visit this fall.

Four-star running back Isaiah Rogers is another name to know. The Massachusetts prospect is ranked 148th overall and is the caliber of back the Huskers have struggled to land under Matt Rhule, who has just one blue-chip running back commitment in four classes.

That’s not enough for a program that used to be considered one of the best running back factories in college football. Getting that fixed is imperative. Landing Rogers would be a good place to start.
