Thomas Fidone poised for monster season with Nebraska football

Thomas Fidone came to Nebraska football as a highly-touted recruit and in 2024, he’ll finally live up to that billing.

The Nebraska football career of Thomas Fidone hasn’t gone as expected — for a lot of different reasons. But as he enters his redshirt junior season, all that is poised to change.

The former top-40 recruit suffered season-ending injuries in his first two seasons. Last season, 2023, was the first time we got to see Fidone and while it took him time to get back to 100 percent, he was productive with 25 receptions for 260 yards and four touchdowns, the most by a Huskers tight end since 2010.

It was good to see the 6-foot-6, 255-pounder finally look like the elite tight end Nebraska football fans hoped they were getting when he signed out of Council Bluffs, Iowa in the 2021 recruiting class.

Fidone was one of Scott Frost’s biggest recruiting wins, only he hasn’t met that promise…yet.

Thomas Fidone will realize his potential in 2024

Outside of the issues, Nebraska has had other problems. Namely, the quarterback position. The tight end is the quarterback’s best friend, but if your quarterback can’t throw, the tight end won’t produce.

That was the case last season. Fidone was solid. By the end of the season, he looked like a dude with an NFL future. But in 2024, I expect to see that 10 fold.

Ok. Maybe saying Fidone will be 10 times better is a little extreme but there will be a noticeable difference. He’s going to have confidence in his body for the first time in years. The freakish tight end will also be playing with an elite quarterback (Dylan Raiola), who won’t have a problem getting him the football.

Nebraska football fans are talking up the wide receivers and with good reason. That group is dynamic, but man, that’s going to open up things even more for Fidone, who’ll have 1-on-1 coverage most of the time. He’s going to win that matchup and Raiola will feed him the ball.

Just watch and don’t be surprised if Fidone nearly doubles his reception total from the 2024 season.
