Nebraska football and Michigan are duking it out for Rocco Spindler, the former Notre Dame offensive lineman who entered the transfer portal last week.

Spindler is 6-foot-5, 325 pounds, and a former top-100 recruit in the 2021 class. He started 13 games this season for Notre Dame and has 23 career starts.

However, he wasn’t the starter coming out of fall camp. There was also a question about him starting next season so a transfer made sense.

Indiana hosted him for a visit this weekend. A visit to Michigan was expected according to Pete Nakos of On3.com, but it didn’t happen. Nakos then reported that Spindler would visit Nebraska football on Tuesday.

That’s significant. Spindler was on a Zoom call with the coaching staff over the weekend. Tuesday is the deadline to register for spring classes so a commitment could be imminent.

Nebraska has put a strong NIL offer on the table. Yet, Michigan still looms. A visit is possible but it sounds like that wouldn’t happen until this weekend and probably won’t if the visit to Lincoln goes well.

According to Sam Webb of The Michigan Insider, Spindler wouldn’t be able to take part in spring ball with the Wolverines. It’s unclear if that is also true for Nebraska. If not, that could give the Huskers an edge.

They could use another starting-caliber guard on the inside, probably more than Michigan. If they are willing to reflect that in their NIL offer, Spindler could commit to Nebraska football as early as tomorrow.

If he doesn’t though, my money is on Michigan.
