Nebraska football made a big announcement on Friday afternoon, as it was announced that they restructured defensive coordinator Tony White’s contract. White’s annual salary has been increased to $1.6 million per year for each of the two remaining seasons on his contract, per a university press release.

This is an increase of the $1 million salary White made in 2023.

White improved the Nebraska football defense tremendously. They allowed 303.5 yards per game in 2023, the best mark for a Nebraska football defense since 2009. They ranked 14th nationally in total defense last year. That was the best defensive ranking for the Huskers since 2010.

White has been one of the top rising assistants in the coaching ranks. He was nominated for the Broyles Award for the second year in a row this season. The Broyles Award is given to the nation’s top college football assistant coach.

White released a statement per the University press release on Friday.

“I am proud of what our players accomplished this year and am excited to build on that success moving forward,” White said. “It is a privilege to have the opportunity to coach at Nebraska, and to work for a great leader in Coach Rhule, and I feel honored to work alongside our defensive staff every day.  Go Big Red!”

A positive development for Nebraska football

This is certainly a positive development for the Nebraska football program. White took over a defensive unit that needed to find an identity in 2023. He helped them find it. Now, he will return along with several key players, such as defensive lineman Ty Robinson. Nebraska football will look to build off the success they had last year.

Whether or not white was going to return was one of the biggest storylines for Nebraska so far this offseason. Having white back is important for a Nebraska group that will face a tougher schedule next season. On top of this, the Nebraska football program is still rebuilding. Having continuity on the defensive unit is not something Nebraska has had in quite a while.

White is destined to become a head coach one day. However, it appears he is staying at Nebraska for now.
