Nebraska football playoff odds take a big jump for 2024

Nebraska football is a long shot to make the College Football Playoff, but maybe not according to the oddsmakers.

Nebraska football fans are known for drinking the Kool-Aid but some national pundits are really high on the Huskers too including the oddsmakers.

Recently, Nebraska football had +1800 odds to make the 12-team College Football Playoff. However, in some recent odds released, the Huskers are now +900 and +1000.

That’s a pretty big leap. I’m not saying I would bet money on the Huskers making the playoff right now, but I can see why the oddsmakers think Nebraska has a decent chance.

The favorable Nebraska football schedule

According to the Coaches Poll, Colorado is the highest-rated team that the Huskers will play before their eighth game against Ohio State. They should be favored to win all of those games, along with home games against Wisconsin and UCLA in the last four games.

Nebraska is not favored to win road games against USC, Iowa, or Ohio State. Yet, realistically, if the Huskers can win their home games and beat Indiana and Purdue on the road, that’s nine wins.

Nebraska football probably needs 10 wins this season to make the playoff, so a road win over USC or Iowa would be required.

How likely is it?

Don’t get it twisted and say I’m predicting the Huskers to make the playoff, I just don’t think it’s that far-fetched.

Beating Colorado, Wisconsin, Rutgers, and UCLA at home isn’t a stretch. It will take quality football and Nebraska can’t be plus-15 in turnover margin. It’s hard to beat anyone playing like that — a lesson the Huskers have learned over the past seven seasons.

If Matt Rhule can teach this program to stop beating itself, that would go a long way, and with a quarterback like Dylan Raiola, the playoff isn’t a pipe dream anymore.
