The phrase must-win game is overused, but Saturday was a must-win game for Nebraska basketball, which makes the 67-65 loss to Minnesota even more painful.
For the third time in the past four games, Nebraska basketball spotted the opponent a double-digit lead. The Huskers rallied against Northwestern, but now they have lost three straight after losing to Penn State, Michigan, and Minnesota.
The Huskers were barely holding onto an NCAA tournament berth before. They were projected to make the field ahead of the loss, but now that Nebraska basketball has dropped a game to a quad-3 opponent and looked ugly doing it, the bubble has probably burst.
Assesing Nebraska basketball NCAA tournament chances
Nebraska basketball is 17-12. The Huskers are 7-11 in the Big Ten and not even guaranteed to make the Big Ten tournament at this point.
Once again, the 3-point defense was atrocious. Nebraska allowed Minnesota to make 10 triples, including a wide-open shot, to win the game with a few seconds left. Against the worst 3-point defense in the conference, Nebraska made 4-of-16. They also missed nine free throws.
Juwan Gary and Brice Williams each scored 21 points. Gary scored a put-back to give Nebraska the lead in the final seconds, but the Huskers didn’t execute on defense, and the season is teetering. on the brink of disaster.
Nebraska isn’t completely dead. It could make a run in the Big Ten tournament, or it could win the next three games, but after losing four of five, it feels like the bubble has burst.
Even when the season is on the line, Nebraska hasn’t been able to rise to the occasion, and now it feels like the NIT is where this team is headed, which is a massive disappointment.
