As fun as it was to see Nebraska football blow out Akron and Houston Christian by a combined score of 127-7, there wasn’t much to learn from two dominant wins.
It was great to see Nebraska football play as dominantly as it did in the past. The Huskers didn’t play with their food. They had over 700 yards of total offense against Akron, and followed it up with over 500 against Houston Christian.
Dylan Raiola has eight touchdown passes and zero interceptions. He’s on pace to set the school record for passing yards. The defense hasn’t allowed a single opponent to reach 100 yards passing.
Nebraska football actually leads college football in opposing passing yards allowed.
There are plenty of things to be encouraged about. That includes gutting out a 20-17 win over Cincinnati. It’s worth noting that the Blackshirts are allowing just eight points per game, with just three touchdowns surrendered.
There are some concerns, though. The pass rush hasn’t been super productive (five sacks), and Nebraska is allowing 136 rushing yards per game (4 yards per attempt), which isn’t great with the Big Ten’s leading rusher, Justice Haynes of Michigan, coming to Lincoln on Saturday.
Michigan is an early 1.5-point favorite. The Wolverines had over 600 yards of total offense last week, including 349 from Bryce Underwood, who rushed for 114 yards on top of passing for 235.
Most of those yards came on scrambles. Michigan doesn’t utilize the QB extensively in the traditional run game, although that could change, and Underwood could become more active in the zone read.
Nebraska football is allowing 66 passing yards per game. Michigan may have a 5-star quarterback, but the receivers are a question mark. The Wolverines’ offensive line isn’t great. Nebraska has the better offensive line. But Michigan has the better defensive line, so it might come down to the quarterbacks.
But outside of the fact that TJ Lateef is a baller and a future starter, hopefully at Nebraska, and that Kwinten Ives is RB2, we didn’t learn much from the past two games, except that this Nebraska football team is good.
How good? We will find out Saturday against 21st-ranked Michigan.
Nebraska volleyball stays hot
The Huskers will remain No. 1 when the latest AVCA Coaches Poll comes out after a three-set win over Utah on Friday. Utah took the first set, 25-21, before Nebraka swept the final three: 25-8, 25-18, and 25-13.
Rebekah Allick was a force for the Huskers with 13 kills and 4.5 blocks. Harper Murray and Andi Jackson each added nine kills apiece, while Bergen Reilly had 32 assists.
Nebraska volleyball then played Grand Canyon on Saturday, without Murray and Jackson, but still won in three sets by the scores of 25-12, 25-23, and 25-18. Campbell Flynn had 37 assists for the Huskers. Teraya Sigler was the top point getter with 15, 14 coming on kills.
8-0 Nebraska will travel to Creighton on Tuesday to take on the Bluejays. The start time is 6:30 PM CST on Fox Sports 1. The Bluejays were ranked 18th last week and are 5-4.
