Earlier this week, it looked like Nebraska football was in a prime position to land the commitment of Notre Dame transfer Rocco Spindler.
The 6-foot-5, 325-pound offensive lineman visited Nebraska football on Tuesday. He’s got one season of eligibility remaining and started 13 games for Notre Dame in the 2024 season, including all four playoff games.
Spindler is a Michigan native. The Wolverines are in the mix. Indiana is too and Pittsburgh has also emerged as a threat. Pete Nakos of On3.com reported that Spindler was visiting the Panthers this week and that a decision was coming Sunday.
Nakos also reported that a visit to Michigan could still happen. It’s interesting because it felt like Nebraska was an ideal fit, especially if Spindler didn’t want to play for Michigan.
Not being able to take part in spring ball was a factor in Nebraska’s favor. Spindler can’t do that at Michigan but since Pittsburgh has him in the student directory, just like he is at Nebraska, it makes you think he can there.
Is confidence waning for Nebraska football?
It feels like Spindler wants to weigh all of his options but it’s disappointing Nebraska football wasn’t able to seal the deal when he was on campus. It’s been well-documented how the Huskers needed to add help on the offensive line but so far, they have only been able to land Elijah Pritchett, the former Alabama offensive tackle.
Pritchett is one of the top offensive tackles in the portal. Spindler is one of the top-ranked guards (No. 6 according to 247 Sports in the portal). He’s also ranked 63rd overall. That’s why the competition to land Spindler is fierce.
He would upgrade the offensive line for every team in the mix. Maybe Nebraska has the best NIL offer and the best situation but we’ll see. It doesn’t feel like a slam dunk, which was a big change from a few days ago when some recruiting experts projected a commitment to Nebraska football.
