The hottest topic of conversation surrounding Nebraska football this spring are the freshmen quarterbacks: Dylan Raiola and Daniel Kaelin.

On Thursday, with the first open practice of the spring for Nebraska football, we got our first extended look at both quarterbacks and they were each impressive.

Kaelin is wearing No. 12 and flashed a couple of quality throws in this highlight video released by the Nebraska football account on X. Dylan Raiola also throws a dart down the field.

Tight end Thomas Fidone was captured on video making a nice over-the-shoulder catch. The veteran also met with the media and gave even more insight into the young quarterbacks. Fidone said that all three quarterbacks “had great offseasons” and said, “it’s exciting for us as an offense.”

Fidone is someone who could have a breakout season for Nebraska football, now that he’s fully healthy. He said Kaelin has always “thrown a good ball.” He also said he’s been “impressed” with both freshmen quarterbacks.

Matt Rhule said at his press conference that all three Nebraska quarterbacks need to be ready to start by the end of the spring. Well, so far so good for the Huskers on that front.

Nebraska Cornhuskers open Big Ten baseball season

Following a 17-5 start, the Nebraska baseball team will open Big Ten play this weekend with a three-game series on the road at Northwestern. The three-game set starts today at 3 PM CST. The Huskers and Wildcats will also play on Saturday and Sunday at 1 PM. All three games will be on BTN+.

Brett Sears (4-0, 1.14 ERA) will get the start on Friday for Nebraska baseball, followed by Drew Christo (1-1, 4.13 ERA) and Mason McConnaughey (2-2, 1.65 ERA). Sears leads the nation in WHIP (0.58) and is third in college baseball in hits per nine innings (3.66).

The pitching has taken a big step forward this season for the Cornhuskers. But the bats are still working too. Josh Caron has been a key contributor at the plate hitting .296. He also leads the Huskers with five home runs and 26 RBIs. Rhett Stokes is another name to know — he’s batting .382 with seven doubles and nine RBI.

Nebraska baseball was just outside the top 25 this past week and had a Tuesday game against No. 23 Kansas State canceled due to weather. Northwestern is also playing its Big Ten opener. The Wildcats (10-12) are one of five Big Ten teams to have a losing record in non-conference play.
