Nebraska football was able to pick up another addition to the 2023 class in walk-on David Borchers. Borchers measures in at 6-foot-3, 260 pounds. He made the announcement of his decision on Twitter Monday night.

Borchers had offers from Army, Iowa State, Nebraska, South Dakota, and Southern Illinois. He is a three-star recruit, and has a numerical rating of 84. He is the 18th overall defensive lineman in the state of Iowa per the 247Sports Composite Rankings. He is a member of the class of 2024.

Borchers has tremendous athleticism at the point of attack. As soon as the ball is snapped, he is able to shed his blocks quickly and make a tackle. He can get into the backfield with ease, and his agility is certainly impressive for a defensive lineman. In addition to being able to get to the backfield, he also has the skill set to stop the run. He is able to shed blocks relatively easily, and fill running lanes.

What can he bring to Nebraska football?

Borchers is not the type of guy that is going to be an All-American. However, he could be a valuable depth piece for a program that really needs help on the defensive line. Nebraska football needs help with Stephon Wynn transferring last week. They desperately need bodies at the position, and this is what Borchers offers them. Now, the program has to develop him, and see if he can become more than a serviceable player at the position.

It will be intriguing to see if he can make an impact, and how Nebraska football utilizes him. It’s very clear that this coaching staff has a talent for finding diamonds in the rough. Now, it’s just about if he can provide value to the roster and add that help on the defensive line. Over the course of the season, any depth is good depth. Nebraska at least was able to get some help for the line, and that counts for something.
