The Nebraska volleyball team aims for the national title match, plus the latest Nebraska football news.
It’s been a wild week for Nebraska football fans. But on Thursday, the football team will take a back seat, at least for a few hours, as the Husker volleyball team aims for the national championship match.
After advancing to another Final Four, the first since 2021, Nebraska volleyball will play Pittsburgh tonight in the Final Four. The Panthers have made three consecutive Final Four appearances. They were the same team the Huskers beat in 2021 to advance to the national title match.
Nebraska features four All-Americans Merritt Beason, Lexi Rodriguez, Harper Murray, and Bergen Reilly. Andi Jackson has also been spectacular as a freshman, dominating as a middle blocker. Murray and Reilly are also dynamic freshmen.
Yet, the Panthers have the top freshman in the country Olivia Babcock, an opposite hitter that was the National Freshman of the Year. She’s had 16 kills in each of her last two matches. Torrey Stafford is another dynamic freshman at outside hitter for the Panthers.
The Panthers hit .308 this season and are leading the NCAA tournament with a .340 hitting percentage. Nebraska, on the other hand, is allowing teams to hit just .070 during the tournament. The Huskers also had the best defense in the country during the regular season.
ESPN will carry the match which starts at 6 PM CST. The winner will face either Wisconsin or Texas in the championship match on Sunday.
Nebraska loses another 2024 commitment
A lot of things have been happening with Nebraska football recruiting. Dylan Raiola is coming for a visit and the five-star quarterback is trending to the Huskers.
Kyle McCord was trending to be a Nebraska football commitment, but then, on Wednesday, he announced that he’s moving on and no longer considering the Huskers.
Daniel Kaelin, the quarterback committed to Nebraska football right now in the 2024 class, is also visiting Michigan State. He’s not the recruit that decommitted on Wednesday night though, that’s Jaxon Lee.
The EDGE just joined the class recently but is expected to sign with Tulsa now. J.D. Crisp also decommitted recently and mostly, it seems like the Huskers are running into a numbers crunch.
Nebraska football landed Alexander Ruggeroli on Wednesday, a 6-foot-6 offensive tackle from Las Vegas, but it was reported that he’s coming as a walk-on, likely with some sort of NIL deal instead of a scholarship.
That’s how tight things are. It’s possible Lee was offered the same thing and decided to take a scholarship from Tulsa. Regardless, it’s just part of the process right now as the Huskers get closer to Early National Signing Day.
The most important thing is getting the signature of Dylan Raiola, who at this rate, could be the Huskers starting quarterback next fall.
