Does Nebraska football have any shot at 5-star David Sanders?

Nebraska football is a finalist for five-star offensive tackle David Sanders, but is there any realistic hope for the Huskers to land him?

Nebraska football hosted five-star offensive tackle David Sanders for an official visit in the spring and on Sunday, the elite recruit included the Huskers among his list of four finalists.

Sanders, who is making a commitment announcement on August 17th, mentioned Nebraska football as a finalist along with Tennessee, Ohio State, and Georgia.

Alabama and South Carolina were in his top six — Nebraska wasn’t — but the Huskers have overtaken those SEC foes to stay in the mix. Clemson, which has hosted Sanders for more visits than any other program, was also eliminated.

What does it mean for Nebraska football?

It feels a lot like the recruitment of Brandon Baker in 2024. Baker visited Nebraska football but the Huskers never seemed to surpass the top three or four.

That’s how I feel the recruitment has gone with Sanders. The five-star recruit from Charlotte, North Carolina, and his family loved the visit. They said it was among the best they had.

The Huskers even had some momentum. However, it didn’t last. Tennessee and Ohio State have created the most buzz in the recruitment of David Sanders, but at least Nebraska football wasn’t eliminated.

I didn’t expect the Huskers to sign Dylan Raiola in the 2024 class but they did. Like Raiola, Sanders would have to revisit campus for me to believe there is a realistic possibility of him choosing Nebraska football.

Since the decision date is in August, when there is a dead period, the end of July would be the last chance to get Sanders on campus. Some recruits take multiple trips that weekend, but it’s a good indicator of where things stand.

If Nebraska can get Sanders to visit for the “Cookout” as it was called last season, then the Huskers could have a realistic chance of winning this recruitment. But one trip to Lincoln isn’t enough. Sanders has visited Tennessee, Ohio State, and Georgia six times each, including at least two visits in 2024.

Nebraska football has hosted Sanders for one visit in 2024. Another will be needed but IF it happens, the Huskers might have a puncher’s chance. If not, I wouldn’t hold my breath on August 17th.
