Jamal Rule’s debut for Nebraska elicits memories of T-Magic

It didn’t take Jamal Rule long to show Nebraska football fans he was special.

Early in the second quarter, with Nebraska trailing three-touchdown underdog Ohio 10-7, Rule took a screen pass from Anthony Colandrea and sprinted 24 yards for a touchdown. It was one of two receptions on the day by Rule, which covered 47 yards.

Nebraska fans heard about his running ability. We saw it in the spring. We heard about how he could pass protection. On Saturday, in the first game of the 2026 season, he showed he could do it all.

The three-star freshman carried the ball 15 times for 122 yards. He had a long run of 39 and finished the day with 169 total yards and three scores.

It was a special performance — the first 100-yard game by a freshman in 22 years.

Freshmen don’t play often at Nebraska. They usually don’t have the kind of impact that Rule did in game one, to the point that it’s safe to say this was the most impactful freshman debut since Taylor Martinez ran for three touchdowns and accounted for 263 yards.

Martinez was a redshirt freshman. So it was a little different. The impact was similar, though. It’s hard to know what that will mean beyond this game. Is this something we will see from Rule on a regular basis?

If so, he could be the Big Ten Freshman of the Year or maybe a 1,000-yard rusher. Mekhi Nelson also went over 100 yards, finishing with 129 on just 10 touches, giving the two backs 298 yards combined.

That will be hard to replicate, but man, it was impressive to see, especially the way Rule ran for a true freshman.

The offensive line deserves kudos. They opened some huge holes, despite there being some shaky moments in pass protection. Nebraska finished with 275 passing yards, 248 rushing yards, allowed two sacks, and scored seven touchdowns.

That output should have exceeded the expectations of most Husker fans, even the ones guzzling offseason Kool-Aid. Rule was a big reason why. He wasn’t the only reason, but if his freshman season can be as magical as Saturday, this Nebraska football team might just turn out to be Matt Rhule’s best.
