Top-5 sweep shows that sky is the limit for Nebraska volleyball

The Nebraska volleyball team didn’t just beat fourth-ranked Louisville on Sunday, the Huskers dominated them in another top-5 sweep.

The Nebraska volleyball team faced another stern test on Sunday, however, the Huskers made it look like it was a walk in the park.

Harper Murray and Merritt Beason led the way offensively for Nebraska volleyball with 20 total kills. Murray had 11 kills to lead the Huskers. Beason had nine.

Yet, like most big wins for Nebraska volleyball, this was driven by defense. Nebraska held Stanford to a .100 hitting percentage earlier this week and did the same thing on Sunday against Louisville, holding the Cardinals to .133 hitting.

I don’t know how you define elite defense, but if you can hold top-5 opponents below .133 in back-to-back matches, that’s gotta meet the definition. The block was impressive as usual and Andi Jackson was also a factor on offense with six kills. She also had three blocks. Bergen Reilly added 25 assists and six digs.

Nebraska opened the match with a 25-16 win in the first set and followed it up with a 25-17 win in set two. Louisville had a lead of 17-16 over the Huskers in the third set, but Nebraska responded and closed it out 25-20. In three sets, the Cardinals didn’t hit better than .172. They also had 25 hitting errors and struggled to serve.

Nebraska, on the other hand, didn’t hit worse than .278. But when Murray, Jackson, and Beason are on and each of them hit at least .293 or better, the Huskers are tough to handle. That loss to SMU seems like a long time ago. It’s a good reminder that the Huskers are vulnerable.

Yet, two top-5 sweeps this week are a reminder of what this team can do when firing on all cylinders.
