Nebraska football projected to land a 5-star, early fall camp intel

It’s been an exciting week for Nebraska football fans.

Not only did fall camp get started earlier this week (Monday). The Huskers were also projected to land five-star, in-state recruit Tory Pittman on Tuesday.

Greg Smith of Rivals, who once covered Nebraska football, projected the 6-foot-2, 180-pound defensive back ranked No. 17 overall in the 2027 class, according to the 247 Sports composite rankings, to commit to the huskers in the 2027 class.

Pittman is out of Omaha. He had three interceptions last season and five touchdown receptions as a sophomore. He also picked off two passes as a freshman. LSU has been mentioned as a contender. Michigan, Notre Dame, Oregon, Miami, and others just offered last month.

However, Nebraska football has momentum, and if the Huskers can put together a solid season on the field, it feels like they have the edge to land Pittman, the top-ranked recruit in the state of Nebraska in the 2027 class.

There aren’t a ton of must-land recruits on the trail, but for the Huskers, this is one of them.

Back to fall camp, Nebraska football held an open practice on Monday. The tight end room looked elite. Carter Nelson (6-foot-5, 240 pounds) looks ready to contribute this season. Mac Markway looked stellar too, but there are rumors of an injury on Tuesday, so keep your fingers crossed.

Gunnar Gottula and Tyler Knaak were the first-team offensive tackles on Monday, but that was just the start of practice, and the portion that was open to the media. Gottula could be a factor right tackle, however, Elijah Pritchett, should eventually win the left tackle job. I’d be surprised if he didn’t.

The running back room and defensive line were thought to be weaknesses, at least in terms of depth, but Emmett Johnson expressed confidence in the running backs, which look even better with Isaiah Mozee officially a running back now.

Cameron Lendhart said that Williams Nwaneri is a “freak.” Keona Davis, Cameron Lenhardt, Riley Van Poppel, and all of these dudes are ready take off this season. Dasan McCullough should have an impact as a pass rusher, too.

Oh, and Matt Rhule was talking about punter Archie Wilson after practice Monday, so it seems like the Huskers might have upgraded all of their special teams positions, as well as their coach.

It’s very early. I know fans don’t want to over-indulge in the Rhule-Aid, but at this point, it’s getting hard not to.
