It’s flip season when it comes to college football recruiting and if everything goes as expected for Nebraska football, there could be a couple of flips coming in the next few weeks.

Just recently, the Huskers were projected to flip four-star tight end Chase Loftin. The 6-foot-6, 215-pound tight end is one of the top-ranked players in the state of Nebraska for 2025. He’s committed to Florida State but was projected to flip by Steve Wiltfong of On3.com, as well as Sean Callahan of Husker Online.

That flip hasn’t happened yet, even after another visit. But, there is good news on the defensive side of the ball as four-star EDGE Dawson Merrit, who is ranked 116th overall in the 2025 class according to the 247 Sports composite rankings, has been projected to flip to Nebraska football.

Wiltfong is predicting a flip along with Chad Simmons. Those are the top national recruiting reporters for On3.com. There isn’t a sure thing in recruiting but that’s as close as it gets.

Wiltfong reported recently that Nebraska football was still “warm” for Merritt. He also visited for the Colorado game and also took an official visit for the spring game. Here’s the scouting report from 247 Sports:

“Long, athletic linebacker prospect who can play a variety of roles within a defense. Used in high school as a stand-up outside edge rusher and shows quickness off the snap, fluidity, bend, and closing speed. Also showed he could drop into space and be an asset in coverage. Plays with good discipline and control. Has good change of direction and can stay with ballcarriers looking to put a move on him. Has to fill in and get stronger but has the frame to do so. 3-4 outside linebacker is a possibility as well as SAM backer in other schemes. Projects as a high-impact player at a major program based on length, versatility, feel for the game, and overall athletic talent.”

Christian Jones is ranked 175th overall. Outside of that, there isn’t a player ranked inside the top 200 for Nebraska according to the 247 Sports composite rankings. Merritt is 116th overall and would be an elite get for Matt Rhule.
