Nebraska football looks to have found its punter

Nebraska football has decided to make a change in the kind of punting style it wants to use in the 2025 season, based on the preference of special teams coach Mike Ekeler.

That led to the transfer of former Washington punter Jack McCallister, who was landed during the winter transfer portal window.

Ekeler prefers rugby-style punters, and it looks as though Nebraska football has found its rugby-style punter for the 2025 season at least.

Nebraska football finally finds its punter

According to Sean Callahan of Husker Online, Nebraska football is expected to add 6-foot-2 punter Archie Wilson from Australia. Callahan reports that he will visit the Huskers this weekend but that his addition to the roster is a “formality.”

It will be a change from the previous philosophy, but Ekeler has had success with it at Tennessee, so it makes sense for Nebraska to allow him to hand-pick the guy he wants.

Wilson is from Haileybury College in Australia, which is the same college that produced the punter Ekeler used with Tennessee last season, Jackson Ross.

With the Vols, Ekeler had one of the best punt-return defenses in college football. The Vols finished in the top five during his first season, and they were consistently strong in just about every area of the kicking game.

Matt Rhule teased a punter being added this spring. It was probably Wilson all along, thanks to the connections Ekeler has with the Australian school.

A formal signing will likely be announced in the next few weeks, but the 2025 roster is finalized, I guess, at least outside of the uncertainty surrounding roster limits.
