Nebraska football isn’t looking to take three running backs in the 2025 recruiting class after all. Running back Mekhi Nelson is going to take a mid-week official visit.
The running back who is unranked according to the 247 Sports composite rankings, but ranked as a three-star in the 247 Sports rankings, is actually a 2024 recruit according to Sean Callahan of Husker Online.
That’s the plan for the Nebraska Cornhuskers at least. They want to take him as one.
Nelson’s recruiting profile shows that he’s a 2025 recruit. But Callahan reports that Nelson was going to go to a Prep School this fall and that if the 5-foot-10, 196-pounder joins the Huskers, it will be for the 2024 season along with David Hoffken who recently committed after he was offered at a camp. Hoffken will get his start on the defensive side of the ball instead of offensive tackle, which makes sense if you watched him do pass-rush drills.
EJ Barthel, the Nebraska football running backs coach, has familiarity with Nelson who is out of Connecticut. There are two crystal ball projections in favor of the Huskers and the official visit this week should seal the deal.
Nebraska football also offered a JUCO running back who graduated this past semester and would have been eligible to join the team this fall. So it’s clear the Huskers want to add to the running back room and if Nelson joins the team, it would fill the void of not having a 2024 signee at the position.
Another crystal ball trend for Nebraska football
The Huskers landed the commitment of Malcolm Simpson from the official visitors last weekend and the next up could be 6-foot-8, 300-pound offensive tackle Brian Tapu.
Out of Utah, Tapu has a ton of upside. He raved about his visit and received an expert projection from Sean Callahan on Sunday. Steve Wiltfong of On3.com followed that up with a prediction on Monday and it feels like the talented big man could be the next to join the Nebraska Cornhuskers 2025 recruiting class.
Nebraska was also projected to land Noah King on Monday. He’s a three-star athlete from Ohio and will be taking an official visit to the Nebraska Cornhuskers soon.
Nebraska Cornhuskers add outfielder from SEC
The Nebraska softball team will be looking to make it back to the NCAA tournament in 2025 and they just added an outfielder, Kacie Hoffman, who is transferring back to the state of Nebraska from Arkansas.
Hoffman is from Elkhorn and played for Elkhorn South. She was an All-SEC Tournament selection in 2022 and she will add to a Cornhuskers roster that will be getting Jordy Bahl back from injury.
The outfielder didn’t play last season for the Razorbacks but as a sophomore in 2023, she started 54 games in right field and slashed .223/.439/.294 with 33 hits, 27 RBI, 22 runs scored, 11 doubles, and seven home runs. She also finished with a .941 fielding percentage on 34 total chances
