We run through the latest Nebraska Cornhuskers news as Nebraska football misses on a 2024 EDGE and more.
It turns out that Jacob Smith didn’t delay his commitment announcement at all. The Nebraska football recruiting target just said he was going to delay.
Smith, a four-star EDGE ranked 211th overall by the 247 Sports composite rankings, still chose Michigan over the Nebraska Cornhuskers in a decision that didn’t seem in doubt.
It certainly made you wonder if Nebraska football gave him something to think about when he tweeted “This takes time” on Wednesday. But it turns out, Smith just wanted to drum up attention.
The four-star recruit was set to announce his commitment on the 247 Sports Youtube page and apparently was miffed at some of the crystal ball projections that came out for Michigan on Wednesday, which seems like it caused the delayed announcement in the first place.
At any rate, Nebraska football missed on its top EDGE target for the 2024 class. It was expected and there are some other options on the board, but it’s still a position that needs to be addressed.
Another expert trend with three-star CB Amare Sanders
It didn’t get a ton of publicity this week but three-star cornerback Amare Sanders was projected to Nebraska football by two Husker Online experts as Sean Callahan and Bryan Munson each see him being N.
Sanders is 6-foot-1, 162 pounds out of Florida. He’s ranked 708 overall in the 247 Sports composite rankings for the 2024 class. The On3 industry rankings have him a little higher at 677 overall in the 2024 class. And with the new projections, Nebraska football has a 98-percent chance of winning his commitment via the On3 prediction machine.
It sounds like Sanders wants to make an announcement before his senior season. If that’s true, my bet would be on Nebraska football, which really makes me believe Caleb Benning won’t be in this class, unless the Huskers are just taking him as a pure athlete.
Nebraska Cornhuskers Summer League updates
Bryce McGowens had a strong outing in the summer league for the Charlotte Hornets Thursday. The second-round pick in the 2022 NBA draft scored 19 points, making 4-of-7 from 3-point range.
However, it’s been a little bit of a struggle. McGowens has scored in double figures in five of six games and is averaging just under 13 points a game. Yet, the shooting percentage hasn’t really been great for the former Nebraska Cornhuskers standout. He’s shooting 33 percent overall from the field and 27 percent from 3-point range.
Things also haven’t been pretty for Sam Griesel who has scored a total of five points in 32 minutes with the Boston Celtics. Griesel has been listed as a small forward. But is just 1-of-6 from the field and has seven turnovers in addition to 10 total rebounds.
The G-League is always an opportunity for these guys but it seems like Griesel needs to play in a league that allows him to be a point guard and maybe that means taking his talents to Europe, where he’s more than good enough to earn good money playing hoop.
