Friday could not have gone better for Jordy Bahl and the Nebraska softball team.
Not only did the Huskers roll past their first-round opponent in the NCAA tournament, UConn, with a run-rule victory (10-2), but Bahl became just the fourth NCAA softball player ever to hit 20 home runs in a season in which that same player also had 20 wins as a starting pitcher.
After two home runs against the Huskies on Friday, Bahl has 21 home runs. She’s also 23-6 on the season for Nebraska softball with an ERA of 1.54. The Nebraska superstar also has 257 strikeouts in 177 innings pitched.
Bahl was nominated for the National Player of the Year award, and after she did something only three other players in the history of NCAA softball have ever done, it seems like that award should be a no-brainer.
Jordy Bahl is in a league of her own
Jordy Bahl is the best player in college softball. It’s not debatable.
The ace was 2-for-2 with five RBI in the win over UConn. She also held the Huskies scoreless and without a hit over three innings of work. Ava Kuszak also delivered two hits for the Huskers, with one double and two RBI.
Only having to use Jordy for three innings was perfect. Yet, what made the day even better for Nebraska is the fact that LSU, the 10th-seeded team and host for the Baton Rouge regional, was upset 4-3, by SE Louisiana.
That means the second-seeded Huskers (in the four-team region) will play the No. 4 seed for a spot in the championship game. The team that gets to the title game first has to be defeated twice on Sunday, which is the position Nebraska softball will be in with a win today.
First pitch is set for 12 CST on ESPN+.
