It sounds like Nebraska football has its starting secondary

When Nebraska football head coach Matt Rhule is at the podium, you generally learn a thing or two about the Huskers and that was the case again on Saturday.

Rhule was pretty revealing in his comments following the Huskers’ second scrimmage. He said Nebraska football would “probably” name a starting quarterback this week.

He also offered some injury updates. Javin Wright, a key starter at linebacker, is going to miss some time. Rhule said he will be out “indefinitely” due to medical issues.

Nebraska football starting Secondary is taking shape

However, one of the most interesting things that Rhule said on Saturday was about the secondary. People have wondered about the No. 2 cornerback for Nebraska football dating back to spring ball.

Newcomers Amare Sanders (freshman) and former USC cornerback Ceyair Wright have been making a positive impression on the coaching staff. Yet, Rhule was talking about the secondary on Saturday and it became clear who he wants to see as the starting secondary.

“So for me, when I look out there and I see Tommy Hill, DeShon Singleton, Isaac Gifford, Malcolm Hartzog and Marques Buford, I can tell you I sleep well,” Rhule said.

Buford has played cornerback and safety for Nebraska football. The 5-foot-11, 190-pounder was hurt for most of last season but is back to 100 percent. He was one of the top cornerbacks in the Big Reg Preview and that hasn’t really changed.

The truth is that Wright, Jeremiah Charles, Buford, and Sanders will all be needed, as well as Blye Hill, so I’d expect all of them to play a significant amount of snaps.

But in terms of that fifth starter, Buford is a great option. Hartzog is a good player to have out there too because he’s played cornerback before too. If the UTEP game was tomorrow though, my money would be on Buford to start alongside Tommi Hill, Hartzog, DeShon Singleton, and Isaac Gifford.
