The next month or so should be busy for fans of Nebraska football recruiting.
Official visits are starting this weekend. Commitments are soon to follow. Many of the targets on the board, and there are about 28 official visitors, although probably 27 now that Ryan Mosley has committed to Georgia.
Some others will probably come off the board before they visit. That’s the nature of recruiting, but one that should have Nebraska in the mix all the way to the end is Darion Jones, a three-star in-state cornerback who will announce his commitment on July 4th.
Nebraska football has only offered a few in-state prospects in the 2026 class, but Jones, the younger brother of current Husker Donovan Jones, a cornerback, is one of them.
The 6-foot-1, 170-pound cornerback out of Omaha is ranked No. 489 in the 2026 class, according to the 247 Sports composite rankings. He’s also ranked as the second-best recruit in the state of Nebraska.
According to Greg Smith of Rivals, the July 4th commitment will be a decision between Nebraska, Iowa, Minnesota, Kansas State, and Iowa State.
All five teams in the mix have offered since January. Iowa State, which has landed six commitments from the state of Nebraska, including he top-ranked player Jeff Thomalla, might be the top threat.
Iowa is another team to worry about. All five schools will get official visits with Kansas State going last weekend (May 23), followed by Minnesota this weekend (May 30), then Iowa State (June 6), Nebraska (June 13), and Iowa (June 20).
A decision will come soon after. Nebraska football has both crystal ball projections in its favor. The On3 prediction machine favors the Huskers, too, heading into June.
Now, it’s time to close, but Matt Rhule has been to very effective at that.
