Nebraska football needs to sign a couple of running backs in the 2025 recruiting class. The Huskers already have one commitment from in-state recruit Conor Booth but they are actively looking for at least one more.

Jamarion Parker is a four-star running back out of St. Louis that Nebraska football has made a top priority. He was committed to Arkansas but decommitted recently. He’s got official visits set for Nebraska and TCU. Alabama also offered recently.

The four-star running back is a top priority. It would be great if the Huskers were able to land him but it feels like they are hedging their bet a little bit with three-star running back Mekhi Nelson.

At 5-foot-9, 190 pounds out of Oakdale, Connecticut Nelson is ranked as a three-star by 247 Sports but is unranked according to the 247 Sports composite rankings. EJ Barthel evaluated him in person and extended an offer but the Huskers were the first power-4 offer.

Mekhi Nelson to visit Nebraska football

UConn, UMass, and some other group of five programs have offered Nelson. Syracuse is also in the mix. Nelson is a target that Barthel has been familiar with since before joining Matt Rhule’s staff.

Nelson has two visits scheduled for Nebraska — one is unofficial — the other official according to 247 Sports. The running back will visit Nebraska and I’m sure that will be about evaluation and making sure he’s a take. If that visit goes well, then he’ll make the second.

There is some flexibility there. It’s possible that the Huskers are sending a message to Parker. If they bring in Nelson, that will show they are serious about a commitment. Nebraska could take three running backs in the 2025 class — they only took one in 2023 and 2024 combined, but two feels like the number.

However, as we have seen, Matt Rhule doesn’t seem overly concerned about roster size or scholarship limits, so you never know, but my read is that Nelson is a backup option on the running back board if Nebraska winds up missing on Parker.
