A surprising transfer for Nebraska football, plus more Cornhuskers news

Nebraska football lost another starting-caliber player to the transfer portal, plus more in our Nebraska Cornhuskers news roundup.

The exodus of Nebraska football players to the transfer portal continued on Wednesday. Many of these moves were expected with the upcoming 105-man roster limit, but not all of them and there were a couple of surprises on Wednesday.

It started with starting tight end Nate Boerkicher entering the portal. The junior played in all 12 games for Nebraska football this season and started six. He caught six passes for 93 yards and seemed poised for an even bigger role next season.

Even though his production in the passing game was limited, Boerkicher was a key part of the Cornhuskers offense. He’s one of the best blocking tight ends on the roster and this is a move that caught the staff off guard.

Many Nebraska football fans expected Thomas Fidone to transfer after he didn’t play much against Wisconsin. Yet, he redeemed himself against Iowa and still has another year left.

But if Fidone does enter the portal, the Huskers will have some work to do at tight end. Defensive lineman Keona Davis also entered the portal a few days ago, yet Nebraska football convinced him to return. The Huskers got Emmett Johnson back too, so maybe they can do the same with Boerkicher.

The tight end wasn’t the only transfer on Wednesday. Offensive tackle Jacob Hood entered the portal after playing in just a few games over two seasons. AJ Rollins also entered recently, but on Wednesday night, former four-star wideout Isaiah McMorris entered the portal.

That means two blue-chippers from the 2024 class — McMorris and Dae’vonn Hall — have transferred. The other Bellevue recruit, Daniel Kaelin, is also in the portal. It’s hard to believe how excited Nebraska football fans were when all three committed around the same time.

Yet, none of them ended up playing meaningful snaps for the Huskers.

Nebraska football hosts transfer portal visitors

The Huskers have been busy trying to add talent via the transfer portal, too. On Wednesday, according to Sean Callahan, Nebraska hosted former Michigan offensive lineman Dominick Giudice and former Central Michigan DL Jonah Pace. Long snapper Kevin Gallic will visit on Thursday.

Long snapper isn’t the only special teams focus though as the Huskers, who will lose Brian Buschini, are hosting former Washington punter Jack McCallister this weekend. He averaged 44 yards on 36 punts last season.

Former Kent State EDGE Kameron Olds, who had 42 tackles and six sacks last season, was also offered by Nebraska football and will visit this weekend. He’s 6-foot-4, 245 pounds, and is just one of many EDGE targets for the Huskers in the transfer portal right now.

Nebraska 2025 football schedule released

The 2025 football schedule for the Nebraska Cornhuskers was released on Wednesday. We knew the opponents, just not the dates. Nebraska will open Big Ten play next season at home against Michigan. The Huskers also avoid Oregon and Ohio State.

There are only four road games on the schedule and each is part of a back-to-back. So Nebraska will play at Maryland (Oct. 11) and then at Minnesota (Oct. 18). The Cornhuskers will also play back-to-back road games at UCLA (Nov. 8) and Penn State (Nov. 22) with a bye week in between.

I’m assuming the Cincinnati game will be played at Arrowhead or Lincoln Memorial Stadium. So essentially, the Cornhuskers will start with five straight home games. There might only be two ranked teams on the schedule, assuming Michigan is ranked and better than last season, so it’s favorable.

It’s a playoff-contending schedule if Nebraska football can get its you-know-what together.

Nebraska Cornhuskers roll again in women’s basketball

After routing Minnesota on Sunday in the Big Ten opener, the Nebraska women’s basketball team stormed past Tarleton State on Wednesday, 63-50. Freshman Britt Prince was a driving force in the win. She played 35 minutes, scored 19 points, hit 3 3-pointers (3-of-6), grabbed five boards and dished out two assists. Alexis Markowski struggled from the field (3-of-11) but finished with 15 points and six rebounds.

Freshman Amiah Hargrove scored in double figures off the bench for the second straight game, notching 13 points in 21 minutes. She was 5-of-6 from the field, 1-of-1 from deep, and pulled down three rebounds.

The 9-1 Cornhuskers will host Tennessee-Chattanooga on Sunday (noon CST) before turning their attention to Georgia Tech on Dec. 21. The Yellow Jackets, like 24th-ranked Nebraska, are ranked (25th).
