Merry Christmas, fans of the Nebraska Cornhuskers.
It’s been another memorable, if sometimes, forgettable year for Nebraska Cornhuskers athletics. The Nebraska football team is playing in its second straight bowl game, after another winning season, the second in a row for the first time in over a decade.
The volleyball team suffered another tough loss. The Nebraska Cornhuskers fell short of winning the national championship as the No. 1 overall seed for the third year in a row.
Yet, the volleyball program isn’t the one to complain about. Both Nebraska basketball teams are undefeated, and the Nebraska wrestling team is also ranked in the top five.
There is plenty for Cornhuskers fans to be happy about, but there are still items on the wish list and here should be the top three things for Nebraska fans this Christmas.
A quality QB from the transfer portal
Dylan Raiola is going to enter the transfer portal, so Nebraska football will have a new starting quarterback next season.
Regardless of what happened with Raiola, Nebraska needs to move on. With Marcos Davila also hitting the portal, the Huskers will need to add two quarterbacks from the portal.
Rocco Becht and Josh Hoover are at the top of my wish list for Nebraska Cornhuskers starting quarterback, along with Brendan Sorsby. Aidan Chiles is a dude with a decent floor and a high ceiling.
I wouldn’t have a problem with Nebraska adding a QB to compete with TJ Lateef, but it needs to be a legit starting-caliber QB like Notre Dame’s Kenny Minchey Or Chiles. Not just a backup.
With the difficulty of the schedule next season, the Huskers can’t just have a guy at quarterback. They need a quality starter, and they need to add a quality player to push Lateef or a starting-caliber QB.
A Las Vegas Bowl win
The Nebraska Cornhuskers could certainly use a bowl win. After losing their last two games in a lopsided fashion, the Huskers could use some momentum heading into the offseason.
It would be great if Lateef balled out. I’m interested to see how the defense responds to some different coaching. The run defense can’t be as bad as it has been.
Of course, the Huskers won’t have Emmett Johnson. They will be missing key players on defense, too, and in the final game of head coach Kyle Whittingham, Utah should be plenty motivated.
Yet, beating a 10-win team ranked in the top 15 would be a perfect way to the end 2025. It would also finally put an end to the losing streak against ranked teams, which will reach 10 years with a loss on Dec. 31st.
An NCAA tournament win
This wish can’t come true until March, but it feels like Fred Hoiberg has the team to finally have Nebraska basketball win a game in the NCAA tournament.
Nebraska is ranked 13th in the AP Poll. Hoiberg’s team is playing better than expected, and could even be in the mix for the Big Ten title, especially if they beat Michigan State on January 2nd at the Vault.
Either way, it’s been a historic season. Nebraska is off to the best start in program history, and here’s hoping the Huskers finally get the NCAA tournament monkey off their back this March.
