Husker Big Red Daily: Carter Nelson buzz, Ahmad Hudson waiting game, and Big Ten QB tiers

The Nebraska football season is inching closer each day. Fall camp is just around the corner, and many of the offseason questions will start to be answered.

One of the lingering questions this offseason is about the impact of Carter Nelson. The former top-100 recruit, who nearly ended up at Georgia instead of playing for Nebraska football, has played in every game over the past two seasons, mostly on special teams, but hasn’t lived up to the hype.

Nelson was an 8-Man football player who did a little of everything. Nebraska has tried to make him a tight end. So far, it hasn’t really worked out. A hip injury didn’t help things. In two seasons, Nelson has 12 receptions for 97 yards and a touchdown.

After catching just two passes last season, Nelson needs to have a breakout season. He’s got three years of eligibility remaining, but according to Damon Benning, a former Husker and the Nebraska color analyst on Gamedays, said recently of Nelson: “He’s in my top 6-7 wideouts for this season. I’m very high on him…this is my biggest turnaround opinion on a player.”

Flat out, there has been zero buzz about Nelson. I had him listed as a tight end on our most recent depth chart, although we specified that he could play the move position, which includes being bumped out to the slot.

However, with the emergence of Luke Sorensen, Nelson might not be needed in the tight end room. His best asset has always been his pass-catching ability. Shifting to wide receiver might be a good thing. He’s listed as a tight end on the roster, but if he can carve out some sort of role as a pass catcher, that would be huge for Nebraska football.

The wide receiver depth chart won’t be easy to scale up, though. After the top three of Jacory Barney, Nyziah Hunter, and Kwazi Gilmer, you have Quinn Clark, Cortez Mills, and also Janiran Bonner, who plays a WR/FB/H-Back role.

Don’t expect any news soon on Ahmad Hudson

While Nebraska fans were buzzing after Keith Williams teased some good news on the recruiting trail last weekend, it probably wasn’t about Ahmad Hudson, or if it was, we won’t hear about it for a while.

Bryan Munson of Husker Online reported on Wednesday that Husker fans shouldn’t expect anything to happen soon for Hudson. Keep an eye out closer to signing day, which he thought was a better time for Nebraska to actually complete the flip, because it would give Lane Kiffin less time to maneuver.

Nebraska fans should have hope. They will just need to be patient.

Anthony Colandrea ranked among the fourth tier of Big Ten quarterbacks

Two writers for The Athletic ranked college football quarterbacks. Among the Big Ten, players were separated into four tiers of QBs. Dante Moore and Julian Sayin are tier 1. Jayden Maiava and Josh Hoover are tier 2. Tier 3 is Demond Williams, Malik Washington, Rocco Becht, Nico Iamaleava, and Drake Lindsey.

Colandrea is among the fourth tier, behind Bryce Underwood of Michigan and Colton Joseph of Wisconsin. Essentially, the Athletic ranked Colandrea as the 12th-best quarterback in the Big Ten.

The Mountain West Player of the Year last season will have a lot to prove in Lincoln. He’s the third-highest-graded quarterback coming back, via Pro Football Focus, but we’ll have to see if that production translates to the Big Ten.
