The college basketball transfer portal opened on Monday and the action is expected to be fast and furious. Nebraska basketball is one of the teams still playing, while having to deal with the portal, but that’s just the reality right now.
Nebraska basketball needs to be successful this offseason after too many misses in the transfer portal last year. The Huskers need replacements for Juwan Gary and Brice Williams, as well as a point guard, another big, and more 3-point shooting.
Fred Hoiberg has talked about the drop in 3-point makes for Nebraska this past season, compared to 2023-24. That will need to improve and that means adding good shooters from the portal.
There have been tons of rumors so far and reports of contact, but to this point, Nebraska basketball is targeting just these players, although others will surely arise.
Early Nebraska basketball transfer portal targets to know
Pryce Sanfordt is one of the names on the radar according to Robin Washut of Husker Online. The 6-foot-7 forward would be a nice addition and shot 40 percent from 3-point range last season for Iowa as he averaged 8.8 points per game.
Iowa guard Josh Dix, who averaged 14 points per game last season and shot 42 percent from 3-point range, is another player Nebraska basketball is interested in, and in contact with, but it feels like a longshot for the Huskers.
Jalen Jackson, a 6-foot-2 guard from Purdue Fort Wayne, is generating a bunch of interest. Nebraska basketball is one of the teams in the mix according to Jamie Shaw. He was a childhood friend of Connor Essegian, so that could help the Huskers. He averaged 19 points per game last season in addition to 3.7 assists and 1.5 steals. Jackson only shot 26 percent from 3-point range but was at 41 percent in 2023-24.
6-foot-10 Valpo big man Cooper Schwieger has also been contacted by Nebraska basketball according to Joe Tipton of On3.com. He averaged 15.8 points per game last season and also averaged over 13 points per game as a freshman.
Schwieger shot just 28 percent from 3-point range last season but made 31 percent in 2023-24. Yet, the Huskers are among 18 teams that have reached out and that list includes Michigan, LSU, Villanova and Kansas.
Drew Fielder, a 6-11, 235 sophomore from Georgetown is another target according to Washut. He averaged 7.1 points and 5.4 rebounds per game this season for the Hoyas.
