Texas A&M will reportedly target Nebraska athletic director Trev Alberts for the same position. This was reported by the Houston Chronicle’s Brent Zwerneman.

Alberts assumed the Nebraska athletic director position on July 14, 2021. Alberts had made several big-time moves both in terms of expanding Nebraska sports and coaching hires. He hired Matt Rhule in November 2022, one of his first major hires as athletic director.

In addition, Alberts threw his support behind Nebraska basketball coach Fred Hoiberg and helped put women’s college volleyball on an even bigger stage last summer, when the Nebraska volleyball team played a match at Memorial.

It is worth noting that Alberts signed an extension on November 15, 2023. I praised the extension at the time, and I fully believed that Alberts was going to be a stabilizing force for Nebraska athletics. It seemed as though the athletic department was finally stabilizing, after years of an organization in the athletic department. Now, that may not be the case

This raises a ton of questions, especially if Alberts is hired by Texas A&M. First, what will happen to the future of the current coaches with the athletic programs? Every single program is playing a high level right now.

The state  of the programs under Trev Alberts

For instance, Fred Hoiberg and Amy Williams are taking the men’s and women’s basketball teams to heights they have not seen in years. Matt Rhule is slowly rebuilding the football program into a potential force in the Big Ten. Will Rhule leave now that Alberts, a strong supporter of the football program itself, may no longer be there? Will Bolt and Nebraska baseball are playing at a high level as well, after years of struggling out of the gate.

Perhaps the only coach whose future may not even be in doubt is volleyball coach John Cook. If Cook were to be fired by a new athletic director, there would undoubtedly be riots in the streets of Nebraska. I’m only half-joking with that.

Secondly, why would he be leaving? Is it a result of Texas A&M having more money to give him? Are there other issues in the athletic department that we don’t know about? It will be interesting to find out why he left, if we ever get an answer. This certainly isn’t the place to speculate right now.

This seems like it is coming out of the blue. This would also mean that Nebraska athletics would have to start over once again. The lack of stability in the Nebraska athletic department over the years has been alarming. Between coaching hires, and athletic director transitions, things have not been smooth as of late. It appeared as though that would change under Trev Alberts.

Instead, we may be back to square one again. The Huskers might be looking for an athletic director that will help lead them into the future. Nebraska has struggled mightily over the last decade to find stability, and the potential of Trev Alberts leaving certainly does not help matters.

A feeling of betrayal

This feels like an act of betrayal. This feels like he just wanted to use Nebraska athletics as a chance to get a higher position. In the end, he may leave the Nebraska athletic department in a tricky situation, much like Bill Moos did.  Here’s to hoping the reports are not true. With that being said, things do not appear to be trending in the right direction. Nebraska fans are keeping their fingers crossed.
