Matt Rhule has gone viral a few times during his tenure as a Nebraska football head coach. Tuesday was another time, at least among Husker fans.
Why? It was Rhule’s response to a question about the recent comments made by former Nebraska football head coach Scott Frost, who said, “Don’t take the wrong job,” when asked about what he learned from his time in Lincoln.
Instead of taking shots at Frost, or even Trev Alberts, Rhule didn’t do that. He showed true leadership, and in part, agreed with Frost, saying that Nebraska “wasn’t a good job” when he got there.
Rhule said Nebraska was “behind on NIL, behind on everything,” during his breakout session during Big Ten Media Days. “This wasn’t a good job. We’ve made it into a good job, and we’re making it a great job,” he said.
The current Nebraska football head coach praised Alberts, now the Texas A&M AD for showing him what Nebraska could be after some investment — investments in athletics that have helped other programs at Nebraska thrive.
Now, it’s time for Nebraska football, Rhule said. He called Nebraska like a mansion that just needed to be rebuilt. Obviously, he feels good about that process, saying, “I like our team.”
The whole thing was refreshing. It also wasn’t surprising. Rhule is a leader. He’s building a championship culture, and I can’t wait for the start of the 2025 season.

On that note, Rhule said he wasn’t worried about losing close games. He said the team just wasn’t good enough, so the focus was improving during the offseason, which he believes they have. The third-year head coach said he was “excited” for the first close game.
Nebraska’s head coach also confirmed that Carter Nelson is a full go. Gunner Gottula, last season’s starter at left tackle, who is competing with two others at right tackle, is also ready to go.
Dylan Raiola also said that Nebraska’s long-term goal was winning a national championship. We’ll see how close they get, but first things first, Nebraska needs to make the College Football Playoff.
