The college football season is a little over three months away. Nebraska football will kick off in primetime against Cincinnati on ESPN.
Among Nebraska football fans, who suffered through the bowl streak, which ended last season, the excitement for the 2025 season is palpable.
Matt Rhule’s team tends to take off in his third year as the head coach. At least they did with Baylor and Temple. Rhule upgraded his coordinators — all three of them this offseason — and also returns one of the most talented quarterbacks in college football.
Dylan Raiola needs to take that next step this season, but with Dana Holgorsen as the offensive coordinator, along with an upgraded receiving group and offensive line, Nebraska’s offense should be much improved — dare I say explosive?
With spring ball just wrapping up across the sport, Vegas oddsmakers have updated their projected win totals for over/under bets.
In terms of the Big Ten, five teams have projected win totals over Nebraska. Penn State, Oregon, Ohio State, Indiana, and Michigan are the others. Oregon, Penn State, and Ohio State have over/unders at 10.5. Michigan and Indiana are at 8.5.
Nebraska football will easily clear 7.5 wins
The over/under for Nebraska football’s win total in 2025 is 7.5. That seems reasonable. It was 6.5 last season. The Huskers cleared that bar, and I don’t think it’s a bold prediction to say Nebraska football will hit the over again.
The schedule features two games against teams projected with higher-win totals. Penn State, on the road in November, plus the Big Ten opener against Michigan, which probably won’t have head coach Sherrone Moore due to suspension.
With road games against UCLA, Penn State, Maryland, and Minnesota, the schedule is extremely manageable. If the Huskers can win the opener, and beat Michigan, they could be 5-0 heading into back-to-back games against Maryland/Minnesota.
The chance to make a run at the College Football Playoff exists for Nebraska. It’s not hype or a pipe dream. It will take some players improving and overachieving.
However, with improved special teams, a better offense, and a defense that could also be better in 2025, I would bet the over on 7.5 without a second thought.
