Nebraska football might be over the scholarship limit but the Huskers could use someone like Tywone Malone, who is in the transfer portal.
A popular topic of conversation among Nebraska football fans has been the scholarship numbers. The Huskers are over the 85 scholarship limit and according to Sean Callahan of Husker Online, they would need to cut about 15 scholarships in order to make some transfer portal additions.
Nebraska football did a good job of addressing needs during the first transfer window. Yet, the Huskers could definitely use some reinforcements. The offensive line is one position that could be addressed, at least for depth purposes. The same can also be said about the defensive line.
Overall, I feel good about the Huskers’ front. Ty Robinson, Nash Hutmacher, Elijah Jeudy, and Stephon Wynn Jr. give Nebraska some options.
However, you can never have enough defensive linemen. Ever. So when Tywone Malone entered the transfer portal this week, it seemed like a player worth targeting.
Nebraska should pursue Tywone Malone
I talked about some offensive line targets Nebraska should go after earlier this week, but Malone would be a solid addition. He didn’t play a ton at Ole Miss but he wasn’t a bench warmer either. Malone never became a starter and had just one sack in two seasons.
Yet, he’s got the big body (6-4, 300) that you need for an odd front and he could play multiple spots on the defensive line, maybe even nose tackle. He also played baseball for Ole Miss and could potentially help the Nebraska baseball team too. That also shows what kind of athlete he is.
Out of New Jersey, Bergen Catholic to be precise, Malone was offered by Nebraska but didn’t take a visit. He was also offered by Syracuse during the 2021 class, which is when Tony White was the DC there.
So there is some familiarity. There is also going to be plenty of competition for Malone, who does have starter potential but could also be a solid depth piece for just about any program in the country.
I’d love for it to be the Nebraska football program and that’s why I hope the Huskers get in touch with Malone and try to land his commitment from the transfer portal.
