I know it’s early but here is the first bowl projection for Nebraska football going into the 2024 season.

It’s never too early to look ahead. At least in college football and the bowl prognosticators are already out in force but at least Nebraska football fans won’t be disappointed.

Nebraska football fans are sick of the offseason hype train though. The hype feels real this offseason. Matt Rhule is entering his second season as head coach and in his previous college stops — Temple and Baylor — Rhule’s teams have made big jumps in win total in year two.

In his third season at Baylor, two years after winning just one game, the Bears played for the Big 12 championship. Rhule also coached Temple to the American championship in 2016.

Rhule is a winner. He’s also got a quarterback. If the Huskers were functional at quarterback last season, we are talking about a bowl appearance. Hell, if Nebraska football had an average quarterback, the Huskers would probably win the Big Ten West last season.

That didn’t happen though and here we are, still waiting for that first bowl appearance since the 2016 season. Well, Athlon Sports released their bowl projections for the 2024 season and they are drinking the Nebraska Kool-Aid just like we are.

The Huskers are projected to make a bowl, according to Athlon and it’s the Reliaquest Bowl. It used to be the Outback Bowl and is played in Tampa. Tennessee is the projected opponent.

That’s going to take 7-8 wins to get to that game. There will be fewer Big Ten teams available for bowl selection due to the 12-team playoff, but only one or two. If we got that matchup, college football fans would also get to see two of the game’s best young quarterbacks duel.

Nebraska has to hold up its end of the bargain though.
