It has been clear as day that Nebraska football desperately needed to add some help to the offensive coaching staff.
Well on Tuesday morning, according to a report from ESPN’s Pete Thamel, Matt Rhule has done exactly that adding former Houston and West Virginia head coach Dana Holgorsen to the coaching staff.
According to a post from Pete Thamel on X, Holgorsen will work with the offensive staff as a consultant but his role will evolve as the season goes on.
A wise move by Nebraska football head coach Matt Rhule
Hopefully, his role will evolve into offensive coordinator. That probably won’t happen until after the season but if Rhule does decide to move on from Marcus Satterfield as OC at some point, Holgorsen would be an ideal fit.
However, he does run a much different offense than Rhule has talked about.
The two-time head coach who won an Orange Bowl with West Virginia and 92 games as a head coach, comes from the Mike Leach coaching tree. He also worked under Kevin Sumlin as the offensive coordinator at Houston, as well as being the OC for Mike Gundy at Oklahoma State.
There are a lot of impressive offenses during his career — some that even ranked in the top 10 nationally. He coached Case Keenum back at Houston and had him throwing for over 400 yards per game.
Since Nebraska football is struggling to score points (101st in scoring) and Dylan Raiola has just one touchdown and six interceptions over his last four games — the Huskers need an offensive intervention.
Holgorsen flirted with Nebraska football during the offseason. The Huskers added Glenn Thomas to be the quarterbacks coach but they could have used Holgorsen, too, and earlier.
It’s just a bummer that the Huskers could have had him as the offensive coordinator instead of Satterfield who has been a disaster.
This is a wise move by Rhule but hopefully, it’s not too late.
