Rex Burkhead was one of my favorite Nebraska football players of all time. I’ll never forget his touchdown catch against Ohio State or his overtime touchdown run against Iowa.
The dude was and is a Nebraska football legend. The Texan truly embraced what it meant to be a Nebraska Cornhusker and had a stellar career in Lincoln, as well as in the NFL where he won a Super Bowl title with the New England Patriots.
Burkhead accounted for 3,836 yards from scrimmage and scored 35 total touchdowns for the Huskers. The Nebraska Cornhuskers legend was back in Nebraska for a Team Jack Event and the local media asked Burkhead about current Nebraska football head coach Matt Rhule.
“I think Matt Rhule is doing a good job and working his tail off,” Burkhead said to 1011 news.
Not every former Nebraska football player was behind the hire of Matt Rhule, but at this point, it feels like he’s got nearly full support from former players and coaches. Rhule has also done a spectacular job of making those former players and coaches welcome at Nebraska, as they should be.
So it might not be a major headline, but Rex Burkhead is my guy and it’s great to see him praise Rhule, who is going to have Nebraska in a bowl game this season (one prediction for 2024).
Roster limits could be coming for Nebraska football
One thing Nebraska football won’t like and has been fighting against, are potential roster limits. The Huskers have done an incredible job of adding walk-ons and using NIL as a way to land them in the Rhule era.
I don’t know how big the roster is now, but it’s well over the 100-110 limit being proposed for college football according to a new report from Pete Thamel of ESPN. Rhule is against getting rid of walk-on opportunities and most coaches agree it would be bad for the sport.
But it does feel like some sort of roster limits are coming, so this is something to keep an eye on for the Huskers, who have always invested heavily in the walk-on program.
Former Nebraska Cornhuskers playing in the Olympics
If you want a chance to watch Keisei Tominaga this summer, then check out the Japanese National Team in the Olympic Games because Tominaga, the former Nebraska Cornhuskers star, made the Japanese team.
Tominaga was also signed to an Exhibit 10 contract by the Indiana Pacers. My guess is that he wins up in the G-League next season but he’s at least on a path to the NBA. Jack McVeigh, another former Husker, earned his way onto the Australian team. The video below shows McVeigh learning he will be on the Olympic team.
